I used to avoid sending DMs like the plague.
But recently, I’ve had a revelation: having conversations with people—not just prospects—is something entrepreneurs should do every single day.
Why?
It’s all about how growth levers work on social media and how you actually close prospects into clients.
There’s a reason personal brands attract clients. You’re showcasing who you are, your experience, and building massive trust and authority in the process.
Sure, it’s more comfortable to have leads come to you.
But if you want to take control and dictate how much income you make right now (not in some distant future), cold DMs are an excellent tool to include in your customer outreach techniques.
You’re literally one conversation away from making an extra 1k per month selling skills you already have.
Or, in the case of our friend Charles Miller, $100k from a single phone call he didn’t even want to make.
But there are two major hurdles to overcome:
- The fear of even starting a conversation
- Not knowing what to say without looking like a complete moron
Let’s tackle these head-on.
Overcoming the Fear of Approaching Clients
Sending a DM isn’t as scary as you think.
It’s like working out a muscle—you need to build the habit and routine before you gain solid client communication skills.
“Experience breeds confidence.”
Here’s a big insight: If you build the habit of daily outreach, you’re essentially guaranteed to make money in time.
Why? It’s the principle of compounding, as described in the book “The Slight Edge”:
Do something easy every single day. And stick with it long enough until it compounds.
In the case of sending DMs, just focus on sending one.
Then another. And another.
The key is to keep the momentum going. The habit of talking to someone daily builds your confidence in client acquisition and closing deals.
Your approach anxiety is just your mental projection of an outcome that hasn’t happened.
Don’t have expectations—just start the conversation.
Starting Client Conversations on Social Media
Most people mess up by following a script or trying to sell immediately. That’s not how building relationships works.
If you’re looking for the best practices for client outreach, consider coming from a place of abundance and genuine desire to help. Here’s what works:
- Provide value first
- Show that you know your stuff
- Initiate a conversation without expecting anything in return
For example, if you’re a web designer, you could check out a prospect’s homepage and offer a quick improvement tip. This approach often leads to prospects wanting to jump on a call with you, making the sale much easier.
But be careful—don’t go overboard with free value. You need to be taken seriously as a business owner. Use the initial free value to establish a connection, then transition to your offer.
I show you how to do this in the Conversations to Dollars workshops if you need a step-by-step approach.
The Power of Non-Needy Networking
The key to mastering this approach is a non-needy form of “business networking.”
In other words, be as genuine as humanly possible when reaching out. Find something about the prospect you can honestly relate to and share your own experience.
Spend time every day doing outreach, prospecting, and sending DMs. In the long term, this results in:
- More money
- Improved communication skills
- Better sales conversations
The biggest benefit?
You can start making money within weeks, not months or years. This is great, especially if you’re just starting out with no following or audience.
Where attention goes, money flows.
By mastering cold DMs, you’re tapping into where the attention is today.
(And if you didn’t know, that’s on social media.)
Because building relationships isn’t just about making sales—it’s about creating genuine connections that can benefit you in unexpected ways.
Start your daily DM habit, and watch your network (and income) grow.
Until next time,
— Chris
